The US Food and Drug Administration is warning pharmacists not to buy or use certain prescription drugs containing the active ingredient sildenafil, which is known to interact with certain antidepressants. The drugs are sold under the names Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra.
“The FDA has not provided sufficient information to inform doctors about the safety of using the prescription drugs in this way,” the FDA said in a statement. “FDA continues to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of these prescription drugs in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.”
The drug, which is sold under the brand name Viagra, is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used to treat depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The FDA also issued a warning to pharmacists in July 2013 indicating that a patient may not use sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, when taken by themselves.
